Gasconade County Court History
The courthouse in Hermann is unusually important to local court identity. The official county history says the current courthouse was dedicated July 18, 1898 and is thought to be one of the few U.S. courthouses built entirely with private funds. Charles D. Eitzen left $50,000 to Gasconade County for construction and furnishing.
The building replaced an earlier brick courthouse, which had replaced a log hut at Mt. Sterling. The original plans came from J. B. Legg of St. Louis and A. W. Elsner of Jefferson City. The final design used red brick and stone trim, and the county history notes that bricklayers brushed the bricks with beer to make them shine and even the color.
A fire on February 3, 1905 damaged the dome, roof, and much of the second floor. Repairs were finished in December 1905. Murals were added in 1998 for the centennial celebration, and a new metal roof was installed in 2017. Recent county materials also mention courthouse door work, plaster wall work, and sheriff security needs.
